I attended a Walk-A-Dogthon last Sunday for the launch of YOLO, and managed to capture the cute dogs on camera, as well as to see PM Lee in person. Quite a priceless experience.
I first attended media events in media capacity during internship at OVB, and then because of clicknetwork.tv.
There's something really enchanting about the media industry. Before I was exposed to it, my ambition was to be a public motivational speaker or counselor. But everything changed eversince I got in touch with the media industry.
The power of media isn't just how people use the platform to bitch and expose sassy gossips. More importantly, it gives the people a voice to making our country a better place.
Part of the credit of making me see this point, goes to my Poly lecturer Mr. Danny Yeo. He encouraged us to submit articles to local newspapers for points, but more importantly, made us take a closer look at our country and learn to speak up to make things better. For that, I'm very grateful for his influence.
Okay, I digressed.
My point is, after close to half a year of break, I'm finally back to the media platform, pushing around to find the best shooting angle. The break made me cherish the industry even more. In order to take photos of the dogs, I spent about three hours squatting and kneeling in the stadium, and suffered muscle ache the next day, but it was all worthwhile.
I saw many dog owners bringing their dogs to the event for a walk, and I guess it's great for the bigger energetic dogs who seldom get such chances.
For those who don't like dogs, they are all the same. But to dog lovers, every pet is unique and the most previous of all. There were many photographers at the event, and while some were glad to let their pets be in the central of attention, some owners were very protective of their dogs.
During my search for dogs to take photos of, I came across a really stable dog. It's so stable that you can approach him (I assume), and take photos without him panicking. His eyes don't wander around, and he doesn't bark incessantly. He is the most impressive dog I came across during the event.
Sad to say, the dog breeds at the event was quite limited. I only saw one husky, and not a single Dalmatian nor Chihuahua. There were a lot of golden retrievers though. But the husky was so cute! During one of the competitions where I have to kneel beside the running track, it squeezed itself beside me, between his owner and I. I was trying super hard to resist the urge of patting him.
There was also dog hurdles and beauty contests, and I saw two really elegant dogs who were dolled up nicely by their owner!
Another beauty contestant was a white dog by a little Indian boy. The owner said that having a dog made him understand responsibility. I guess that's true, because its life is in your hands that you can't just shun the responsibility like you do with barbie dolls and soft toys.
The white dog was also pretty adorable, and naturally stood still, and looked slowly from left to right for all photographers to get a good shot. Natural model!
Halfway through the competition, a dog came and sat in front of me. I... was distracted. Hahahaha
I've seen dogs doing the zig-zag race on Taiwan variety shows, but this competition had SUPER MANY poles, spanning across about 100m. The dogs were so focused, you can see it in their eyes. Their determination~!
And then PM Lee arrived! ...and I started to get hurt being pushed around by the sudden crowd rushing to shake his hands.
I got the shot! Weee!
PM Lee cutting the cake!
There was an embarrassing moment during the cake distribution process.
As it's a doggy event, and the cake sponsored by Doggystyle cafe, it wasn't clear if the cake was for human or for dogs. After a while, the emcee suddenly said, "by the way, the cakes are for human okay, not for your dogs!"
Seconds later, he clarified again,"The cake is for your dogs! Not for human! It's made of livers... So unless the owners want to try..."
I was worried for the dog owners, to be honest. Hahaha
